Sammendrag
Important masterpieces of European painting from the Ukrainian city of Odesa have been preserved from the threat of damage during the ongoing war. In this magnificently produced volume, the collection shines forth in superlative reproductions alongside texts in English, German, and Ukrainian – a symbol of solidarity with Ukraine and its cultural institutions. At the heart of this publication are seventy-six works from the painting collection of the Odesa Museum of Western and Eastern Art – masterpieces of European art that span the sixteenth to the nineteenth century. Presented in an art historical dialogue with exquisite works from Berlin’s Gemäldegalerie, this unique collection encompasses Biblical and mythological stories from Italy and the Netherlands, portraits, still lifes, genre scenes, images of the Madonna, and landscapes by artists such as Francesco Granacci, Bernardo Strozzi, Cornelis de Heem, Frans Hals, and Andreas Achenbach.
